Don Hattan Chevrolet is a female-owned dealership , which is just one of the reasons why we provide "no nonsense advice" for women about the care, maintenance and safety of their vehicle.
Advance preparation and the proper tools can prevent a mishap from becoming a serious problem when it comes to you and your vehicle.
Think about what you would do - what you could do - if you vehicle broke down on a long, lonely stretch of highway. A number of things could have happened:
- You ran out of gas.
- The battery died.
- You have a flat tire.
- You were involved in a car accident.
- There isn't any traction, and you're stuck in the snow, mud, ditch, etc.
So, what would you do?
First, don't panic. Panicking leads to more problems. In the scariest moments, thinking rationally is the best solution.
To avoid the panic of being alone and in trouble, prepare your vehicle in advance for these sticky situations.
Keep a list of emergency phone numbers, such as for AAA or Tow Service, the service used by Don Hattan Chevrolet, in your vehicle.
Keep spare change in your vehicle, too. If your car breaks down AND your phone is dead or has no signal, you can use a pay phone - if there is one nearby.
Or get OnStar. No need for phone numbers, change or a working vehicle (except for "just in case").
Use a safe travel system. Let friends or family know where you are, where you are going and when you plan on being there. When others are aware of your location and schedule, others can be aware of any possible problem you might have run in to on the way.
Put together an emergency kit for your vehicle, including:
- Bottled water and nonperishable food
- Blankets or some other way to keep warm
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Signal flares
- Matches
- First-Aid Kit with gauze, disinfectants and cold compresses
- Collapsible shovel
- Multi-purpose knife, like the Swiss army knife
- Basic tool kit
- Duct tape
- Clean, empty container with lid
- Reflective sign or tape
Finally, you need to take care of your car to avoid sticky situations altogether.
Follow the guidelines outlined in your vehicle's owner's manual for when you should change the oil or get the transmission fluid flushed as a rule of thumb.
Or bring your vehicle to Don Hattan Chevrolet. Our certified service technicians can perform a free Pit Stop Service for your vehicle once a month.
