Even if you’re buying a car out of state, the seller should provide you with all the documentation you need to register the car in Kansas. Follow the instructions below on how to buy a car in another state. Buying a car in another state comes with all the same registration and inspection requirements of buying one locally.

How to Buy a Car in Another State

  • Gather the documentation you need. This includes the out-of-state title or manufacturer’s certificate of origin, your Kansas driver’s license, social security number, and proof of insurance.
  • Fill out the applications. In Kansas, this includes the Title Drop Off Application.
  • Have your vehicle inspected. Kansas law requires that your vehicle pass inspection before a registration can be issued.
  • Take your documents to the local Motor Vehicle Office. This includes your inspection documentation. Many Kansas county motor vehicle offices require you to drop the documentation into a drop box. The El Dorado office allows you to show up in person
  • Pay the registration fee once you receive your decal. If you dropped off your documentation, you should receive your registration, plates, title, and other documentation back from the state within 14 days, along with instructions on how to pay registration fees and how much is due.
