First, we want you to know that transmission fluid is purposely dyed so that when there is something wrong, you’ll know immediately due to a color change. Brand-new fluid is translucent and dark red. A Guide to Transmission Fluid Color

Your transmission’s fluid color will darken as you continue to use your vehicle in Wichita over time. However, you should also keep in mind that a dark color could be due to a transmission filter failure. We created a guide for you so that you can remember what different transmission fluid colors mean:

  • Brand-new fluid: Dark red
  • Normal: Darker brick red
  • Service your vehicle soon: Deep blood red/rust red
  • Service your vehicle immediately: Burnt/almost black

Red Fluid Leaking from Car

As mentioned before, transmission fluid is dyed. This makes it easy to identify a leak. If you see red fluid leaking from your car, you more than likely have a transmission fluid leak. You can also identify this problem using the following observations:

  • Odor: Transmission fluid usually smells like petroleum. If the fluid smells burnt, it needs to be changed.
  • Consistency: Transmission fluid will look/feel oily and slick like engine oil or brake fluid.
  • Location of the Leak: Transmission fluid tends to leak between the front and the middle of the vehicle.

Be Proactive with Transmission Maintenance

It’s important to be proactive with your vehicle rather than reactive, especially with your transmission. Take a look at the following tips to keep your vehicle in healthy condition while driving through Andover:

  • Choose the Right Fluid: You should always strive to have genuine OEM parts used in your vehicle. You want to make sure the correct products are being used for your specific vehicle.
  • Follow Your Owner’s Manual: Consult your owner’s manual to see what fluid to use, and to see the recommended maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle.
  • Keep Up with Transmission Service: Part of your routine maintenance should include getting your transmission serviced as well. Our service technicians will be able to see potential problems ahead of time and help you find a solution before it’s too late and too expensive.
